Introducing Kevin Armstrong
Do you have the courage to bring forth the treasures that are hidden within you?
This is a question posed by Elizabeth Gilbert in her bestselling book BIG MAGIC: CREATIVE LIVING BEYOND FEAR. Our viewpoint is that everyone is an artist, so we’re launching this feature to spotlight professionals (in non-arts-related fields) who are bravely showcasing their creative talents.
Kevin Armstrong, a 48-year-old husband, father, and Patient Care Account Manager for Philips Healthcare, embraces the Big Magic of music . . .
CREATIVE GENES: Grandfather was a jazz musician, mother a choir director.
FAVORITE PRIVATE MUSIC SPOT: Outside by the fire at his Flowood home.
WHERE HE’S PERFORMED: Pinelake, Soulshine Pizza Factory, Mudbugs, Crystal Springs Tomato Festival, weddings, regional churches.
BEST GIFT EVER: A Taylor 300 Series Grand Auditorium acoustic guitar for Father’s Day from wife Cheryl.
MUSICAL INFLUENCES: James Taylor, Randy Travis, George Strait, Travis Tritt, Jamey Johnson, Sturgill Simpson.
MOST AMBITIOUS MOVE: Releasing a Christian country album on his own label. This was before technology had evolved to make professional recording more accessible and also before market conditions had shifted more favorably to independent artists.
TWO DEGREES OF BRAD PAISLEY: Recorded songs in the “Neve Room” of Quad Studios Nashville on Music Row, the same spot where Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss put down vocal tracks for their platinum single “Whiskey Lullaby.”
